Tigard's Off-Leash Dog Parks

Tigard has three fenced off-leash parks, built for different trips. Want acreage? Potso wins. Want a five-minute stop? Ash Avenue wins.

Potso Dog Park (7960 SW Hunziker Street) is Tigard's largest at 2.59 acres, with separate small/large sections and shaded tables, listed on the City of Tigard's parks page. It's the default answer here, and that popularity is the tradeoff — weekend afternoons get crowded, so a reactive dog does better early or on a weekday. Parking sits directly adjacent.

Summerlake Dog Park (11450 SW Winter Lake Drive) is a smaller, two-thirds-acre area inside the larger Summerlake Park, with double-gated entry and a seasonal water faucet. Good for a quick visit, not a long play session — Potso or a Hillsboro park serves better if you want room to run.

Ash Avenue Dog Park (12770 SW Ash Avenue) is the smallest here at 0.29 acres, tucked into downtown Tigard off the Fanno Creek Trail. A pocket stop, not a destination — but it pairs naturally with a Fanno Creek walk since the two sit steps apart.

Beaverton's Off-Leash Dog Parks (THPRD)

Beaverton's dog parks are managed by Tualatin Hills Park & Recreation District (THPRD), and the seasonal rules aren't identical across all three — worth reading before you drive out.

Winkelman Dog Park (10139 SW 175th Avenue) is a two-acre off-leash area with a small paddock, a wood-chip winter paddock, a larger grassy area, and an agility section. Only the winter paddock stays open year-round; the larger section runs roughly April through November. Show up in January and you'll find about a third of the acreage available.

Hazeldale Dog Park (19330 SW Farmington Road, Aloha) sits inside an 11-acre park with two acres fenced and split by dog size. Skip-it note: several visitors report muddy sloped sections in wet months — not THPRD-confirmed, so treat it as "bring boots."

Evelyn M. Schiffler Memorial Park Dog Run (5495 SW Erickson Avenue) started as a 2019 pop-up and became permanent after strong support. About 10,000 square feet, wood-chip surfaced, usable through the rainy season without the closures elsewhere. Good pick if winter reliability beats square footage.

Hillsboro's Off-Leash Dog Parks

Hillsboro has four fenced dog parks citywide; three fit westside-commute range.

Hondo Dog Park (off NE 229th Avenue, near Hillsboro Stadium) is Hillsboro's largest at 3.75 acres, with sections for larger dogs, smaller/timid dogs, and an all-weather sand section. The most complete park on this list — the tradeoff is drive time. From Tigard or Tualatin, it's a destination trip, not a weeknight stop.

PCC Rock Creek Dog Park sits on the PCC Rock Creek campus, publicly accessible. Roughly 1.7 acres, with seasonal small/large sections (reported April through November, not yet confirmed on the city's page) plus an all-weather section. Parking tightens during the school year — a weekend visit sidesteps that.

Butternut Creek Park is one of Hillsboro's newer additions, with two fenced areas: natural grass open spring and summer, and turf open year-round — the turf side is your December answer.

Tualatin's Off-Leash Dog Park

Jurgens Off-Leash Dog Area, inside Tualatin Community Park, opened in 2020 after a multi-year push through the city's parks master plan. Fenced and mulched, with a separate small-dog space, double-gated entry, a shelter, agility equipment, and waste stations. The tradeoff: it's Tualatin's only fenced off-leash option, so there's no backup if it's crowded or closed for maintenance.

Outside Jurgens, every other Tualatin park requires a leash no longer than six feet, at all times — don't assume an unfenced field elsewhere in town is fair game.

Dog-Friendly Trails (Leash Required)

Not every good outing needs a fence. These two paved trails skip off-leash time but are worth knowing for a long walk.

Fanno Creek Trail runs through Tigard, into Beaverton, and toward Portland, following the creek for much of its length. Leash required. It connects directly to Ash Avenue Dog Park — a common pattern is a Fanno Creek walk ending with off-leash time there.

Westside Trail is a six-mile paved route between the Tualatin Hills Nature Park area in Beaverton and Tigard city limits, through wooded sections and quiet streets. Leash required. Good for distance over play — a workout trail, not a dog park substitute.

Locals' Picks

Two more didn't make the main list since they're not off-leash spots, but come up often in westside dog conversations. Hyland Woods Natural Area in Beaverton is 30 acres of Douglas fir with a flat, soft-dirt loop, good for an easy leashed walk. Jenkins Estate, also in southwest Beaverton, is a 68-acre historic site with forested trails and a restored 1912 log cabin — leashed pets welcome throughout.

What These Parks Are Like in the Rainy Season

This is the section that actually matters if you're deciding where to take your dog in January rather than July. Not every park handles Oregon's wet months the same way.

All-weather surfacing confirmed: Winkelman's small and winter paddocks, Hondo's sand section, Butternut Creek's turf side, and Schiffler's wood-chip run. Start here if winter reliability is the priority.

Grass sections that close seasonally: Winkelman's larger area, Butternut Creek's grass side, and PCC Rock Creek's small/large sections — worth a call to confirm before a winter trip.

Weekday mornings run quieter than weekend afternoons everywhere on this list, and that matters more in the rainy season — fewer dogs churning a soft surface means less mud by February.

Homes Near These Parks

Proximity to a fenced dog park isn't usually first on a buyer's list, but it matters more than expected once someone's living there. Homes near Potso, Winkelman, or Hondo tend to sit in established, walkable pockets rather than edge-of-town new construction, simply because these parks have been around long enough for neighborhoods to grow up around them. Homes near Jurgens sit inside the Tualatin Community Park area.
